The Magistrates' Court is the first level of the Victorian court system. Sitting in 51 locations, it hears most matters that reach court. There is no jury and each matter is heard and determined by a judicial officer.
The Magistrates' Court can hear civil disputes up to the value of $100,000 arising from debts, claims for damages, other monetary disputes or equitable relief.
Magistrates' Court of Victoria Practice Direction No. 8 of 2022 applies. This Practice Direction is to be read in conjunction with Practice Direction No. 6 of 2022.
