The $73 million Shepparton Law Courts will form a regional headquarters for the Hume/Goulburn region to complete the major urban precinct centered on the open and transparent delivery of justice in Greater Shepparton and beyond.
The new courts will reduce court delays, provide more accessible and responsive services for regional Victoria and offer a safe, secure environment for all users.
The new facilities will reflect the most contemporary applications of courthouse design, information technology, environmental sustainability and changing justice delivery models. The design also ensures capability to accommodate future service demands in the region.
The building will have a welcoming entry lobby inspired by the image of the ancient River Red Gum. The base of the new building will be founded on brick, in memory of older country court houses.
With its prominent corner position, the new five-story building will engage with the older 1930s Court House on High Street by way of a generous landscaped public plaza that will serve the courts' staff and visitors for years to come.
The completed Shepparton Law Courts will centre on a flexible and adaptable court and tribunal environment comprising six main courtrooms with the capacity to vary their use to meet caseload requirements.
Separate facilities will be provided for juries, the judiciary, law enforcement officers, legal service and supporting service providers, volunteers, staff and all required administrative services. Key design principles will optimise security and safety for all court users while providing for ease of access and circulation within the facility.
The Shepparton Law Courts will incorporate six court rooms of which two will accommodate juries and four will also be able to be used as hearing rooms. An increased number of interview rooms and break out spaces will be available for use by a range of clinical, legal and voluntary service providers on days when they are attending at court.
The development will provide 7,900m2 of space over five stories, on a 2,700m2 site (54m x 50m) and is located at the corner of High Street and Wyndham Streets (at the intersection of Goulburn Valley Highway and Midland Highway) in Shepparton (190km north of Melbourne).
The project is currently in the construction phase, with court sittings scheduled to commence in April 2018. Stage Two, which includes the demolition of the current courthouse, development of a new landscaped forecourt and the refurbishment of the 1930's courthouse, is scheduled for completion in October 2018.
