Neighbourhood Justice Centre
The Neighbourhood Justice Centre (NJC) in Collingwood - Australia's first community justice centre - brings an innovative approach to justice. The NJC brings together a multi-jurisdictional court with a wide array of support services, providing comprehensive support for victims, witnesses, defendants and local residents.

With mediation, crime prevention programs and community projects, the NJC aims to address the underlying causes of offending, lower the crime rate and improve safety for the community.
By tackling local problems at a local level, the NJC is helping to create a safer place to live, work and visit.

New court programs
There are a number of court diversion and intervention programs being developed and piloted in Victorian courts, aimed at reducing the level of involvement of offenders and litigants in the courts processes and reducing the likelihood of re-offending.

These include the Koori Court, Drug Court, Family Violence Court and the Court Integrated Services Program (CISP).

The Courts and Tribunals Unit is is responsible for leading and managing the development of these and other diversion, early intervention and prevention programs.

New technology
The Integrated Courts Management System (ICMS) program is a courts-wide initiative that is introducing new technology and replacing current systems to improve how the courts work.

ICMS comprises four main projects:
  • Courts Case Management System – single case management and provision of eServices across all jurisdictions
  • Courts Data Warehouse – enabling management reporting and statistical analysis of courts case management and sentencing data
  • JOIN – on-line knowledge management for judicial officers, associates and registrars (delivered jointly with the Judicial College of Victoria)
  • SMART Courts – high tech, 21st century courtrooms equipped with state-of-the-art video, audio and in-court electronic facilities.
Together, the outcomes of these ICMS projects will provide greater transparency, better organisational control, more accessible information and more flexibility in the way our courts do business.

This will make it easier for all court users to interact with our courts.
