The Supreme Court of Victoria is the superior Court in the State. The Chief Justice presides over the Court, which is divided into two divisions - the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division.

Jurisdiction
Court of Appeal
The Court of Appeal determines appeals against decisions of single Judges of the Supreme and County Courts in both civil and criminal jurisdictions. It also hears appeals from proceedings heard before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and other Tribunals.

Trial Division
The Trial Division is divided into the following:
  • Commercial and Equity Division
  • Common Law Division
  • Criminal Division.

Any proceedings listed for hearing in the Court are allocated into one of these Divisions. Each Division has a 'Head of Division' being a Judge whose role it is to manage the work of the Division in addition to his/her judicial duties.

Practice Court
In addition to the three Divisions, the Practice Court hears interlocutory applications, relevant to all Divisions, which are not within the jurisdiction of an Associate Judge.
The Practice Court also hears and determines urgent injunction applications.

Associate Judges
Associate Judges are members of the Court who carry out judicial functions, generally in the Civil jurisdiction of the Court.

Administration
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the Chief Justice and the President of the Court of Appeal for the day to day administration of the Court, including:
  • strategic and business planning
  • human resource management
  • financial management
  • information technology
  • management of works and services ( including the Court's five buildings).

The CEO has general oversight of all non-judicial staff.

The Principal Registrar is responsible for:
  • the administration of the Supreme Court Registry
  • the secure custody and safekeeping of Court records
  • collecting and accounting for all fees received by the Court
  • all aspects of proceedings and appeals coming within the jurisdiction.

The Registry includes the Prothonotary's Office and the Probate Office.
