Judicial appointments
Judicial officers are appointed by Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Attorney-General. All expressions of interest are treated confidentially and may be drawn upon on an ongoing basis as vacancies arise.
Expressions of interest are sought from participants across the private, government and community sectors of the legal profession. Expressions of interest from women, people with disabilities and people of Indigenous and culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged. Candidates who have not submitted an expression of interest will not be excluded from appointment and extensive consultation will continue to occur as each judicial appointment is made.
Judicial appointees possess personal qualities such as integrity, fairness, maturity, sound temperament and commitment to public service. A demonstrated interest in appropriate dispute resolution is an advantage. Successful appointees are also aware of and sensitive to issues of gender, sexuality, disability and cultural and linguistic difference.
Potential candidates should demonstrate intellectual and analytical skills, sound judgment, decisiveness, and the capacity to command authority, and manage and initiate change. These should be supported by the ability to communicate fairly, effectively and courteously with all court users. A commitment to the use of technology and participation in ongoing judicial education will also be viewed favourably.
